Every few months I like to do an update on one of my favorite artists Geoff McFetridge. I’ve told the story before of the two occasions I’ve stood outside of his studio wishing I had the courage to knock on the door to meet him. I’m sure it’ll happen again next time I go to LA. McFetridge’s style often appears simple, but the complex is subtly embedded in every piece he does, be it a play on words, a visual pun, or the many hidden characters you might find in one of his drawings. There is also something very classic about his work, something that could be compared to Saul Bass or Paul Rand or Milton Glaser. You may have seen his work in The Virgin Suicides title sequence or the Pepsi One campaign a few years ago. He’s also done a really cool line of t-shirts for Patagonia.

Anyway, on to the matter at hand. There are several noteworthy tidbits to cover off on. Firstly the LA Times wrote an article about him in their Tastemakers column. He also has a piece in an exhibit sponsored by Nike called Stages. It opened in Paris a few days ago and benefits the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The show also features works from Kaws, Yoshitomo Nara, Ed Ruscha and several others. Also, if you happen to find yourself in Gap purchasing some khakis, you should pick up on of the two shirts he designed for (Red)/Gaps artist series. Shirt 1 | Shirt 2. And lastly, but certainly not least, Geoff has done all the hand drawn titles for Spike Jones’ highly anticipated adaptation Where the Wild Things Are.
